Super, super, super, What are superfoods?

Superfoods are foods — mostly plant-based — thought to be nutritionally dense and thus good for one’s health.

Superfoods are healthful and, at a very basic level, are said to be rich in particular nutrients. This could be an antioxidant, thought to ward off cancer; a healthy fat, thought to prevent heart disease; fiber, thought to prevent diabetes and digestive problems.

Kani-what? I hear you say….

But I say, this is one of my favourite grains so far. We have used kaniwa flakes in all our home baked breads and we love it! (Recipe follows) So, kaniwa?

Kaniwa is a species of goosefoot (Chenopodium), a flowering plant, similar to quinoa but much smaller – probably why it’s also known as baby quinoa.. . And unlike quinoa, does not contain saponins. Saponins are what make quinoa taste bitter if it is not rinsed well. Botanically speaking, kaniwa is actually a seed, but it is cooked like a grain much like quinoa. This supergrain is packed with protein (a remarkable 16%!) amino acids, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. It is also gluten free!

Ice-cream or coffee in this hot weather? Why choose when you can have the best of both worlds?!

We’ve been so blessed with sunny weather these past few days! The sun has been out in full force and when the sun is out, it is always great to enjoy a cool ice-cream! Of course there are some who prefer to cool off with some hot coffee. Well, I say: Why choose when you can have the best from both worlds! Ice-cream and coffee, a heavenly combination – and it’s not very hard to make one. The coffee has just been chilled. Here’s what you’ll need (recipe from Martha Stewart Living).
